In an official statement, ICE reported that several of those detained had prior criminal records.
Four of them are Mexican nationals with previous charges including theft, assault, child endangerment, and driving under the influence.
The agency spokesperson said the main goal of the operation is to ensure public safety.
“We will not allow foreign nationals with criminal records to walk freely on U.S. streets,” the statement read.
The spokesperson added that anyone violating immigration laws faces arrest, detention, and eventual removal from the country.
The operation is part of an ongoing immigration enforcement strategy that ICE has intensified under Trump and Noem’s directives.
According to the agency, its efforts focus primarily on individuals with criminal histories or pending deportation orders.
Tension in Immigrant Communities
The ICE intervention has sparked concern among immigrant communities in Long Island, where local organizations claim these raids create an atmosphere of fear and mistrust.
Residents reported an increased police presence across several areas of the county since early morning.
Although authorities insist the raids targeted individuals with criminal records, some witnesses fear that the operation may have affected people without serious offenses or those with ongoing immigration cases.
As investigations continue to identify the 12 detainees, the community in Hampton Bays remains on edge, fearing additional ICE arrests in Suffolk County in the coming days.
